Maori DAY 157 Tūrei, May 3, 2022

The Maori people have a connection to islands. The Maori are island people. The Maori main island is Aotearora. The Maori also have a connection to the Hawaiian People.

“I ngā tau whitu tekau o tērā rau tau, i oreore te iwi Māori kia whakapūmauhia tōna Māoritanga.Ka toko ake te whakaaro ko te reo tonu te poutokomanawa e tū rangatira ai tātou hei Māori.

From the 1970s many Māori people reasserted their identity as Māori.  An emphasis on the language as an integral part of Māori culture was central to this identity.

Increasingly Māori leaders were recognising the danger that the Māori language would be lost. New groups with a commitment to strengthening Māori culture and language emerged in the cities.

I marama te kite a ngā kaumātua me ngā rangatira e mate haere ana te reo Māori. Ka whānau mai ko ngā rōpū āki i te reo me ngā tikanga ki ngā taone.”
