Introduction
Indigenous People of the North are often called Eskimos. But Eskimo is a slur. Eskimo means “Eater of raw meat.” Would you want to be called that? Yup, I didn’t think so. That’s why we, the Indigenous people, want to be called by our nation or tribe’s name, not a slur. So now we talk about Inuvialuktun. Ya cool name huh? It’s pronounced “ee-noo-vee-ah-look-toon.” But here’s some bad news, (there’s always a lot of bad news when it comes to Indigenous cultures, languages, and people) there are only 475 speakers, at least that’s more speakers than my native tongue.
