History
Persian is spoken by 70 million people mostly in Iran (Farsi), Afganistan (Dari) and Tajikistan (Tajik). So, Persian is also called Farsi, Dari and Tajik. What Persian is NOT is Arabic. Persian is not Arabic. Persian and Arabic use the same scripts and are spoken in the same regions, but Persian is considered an Indo-European Langauge.
5000 years ago the people of southern Russia and Ukraine split. Half went East, Half went West. The Indo-Iranians split from the indo-europeans and migrated east to Iran and started calling themselves Ariya or Arayans. Iran was called the land of Aryans.
Around 1000BC (3000 years ago), there was a place called Parsa or Persia directly North of the Caspian Sea. In the 6th century BC (2600 years ago) Cyrus the Great conquered many places in the area and spread the Persian Language creating the first Persian empire. Initially Persian was written with characters that looked like this.
Over the next 1000 years, Persian empires rose and fell. By the time of the empire called the Sassanian Empire was founded around 200AD (1800 years ago) Persian had evolved Persian to look like this. This language is called Middle Persian.
The Arab conquest arrived in 700 AD (1300 years ago) with the spread of the Religion of Islam. People in the region were speaking many languages, but Middle Persian – the language of culture and religion and Dari – a version of the Persian language used in the courts survived and even thrived the Arab invasion. Now it looks like this.
