History

It is not known when Cambodia was first inhabited but bones found there indicate that the ancient people closely resembled modern Cambodians. They gathered in villages and fished and herded pigs and water buffalo and grew rice. Some even think rice civilization started there. All of these chores were subject to the weather. There was not much to do in the season when March comes. Sometime, no one knows when, Indian culture made it into Cambodia. India had given Cambodia religion and a written script and a system of absolute monarchy as well as their brand of culture.

The Funan Empire or Kingdom of Funan (starting around 2000 years ago – for 600 years) was one of first recorded civilizations to appear in present-day Cambodia. Next was the Empire of Angkor. The Empire of Angkor was run by Kymer people for another 600 years (starting around 1400 years ago – for 600 years). They spoke Khmer language and were strongly influenced by Indian religious traditions. For the next 600 years until present the power of the Khmer to Phnom Penh.
