Iceland made Icelandic the National Language in 2011. Many Icelander (Íslendingars) people speak English. Icelanders view Netflix and Disney Plus movies and shows in English and other European languages without having the dubbed or subtitled into Icelandic. The old Disney movies were dubbed in Icelandic. Not the new ones. This is one of the reasons the Icelandic language is dying. Many people, especially children are heavily exposed to English daily. Icelanders want to preserve their language. Language is a source of identity and pride. Icelandic is a version of Norse and that has been spoken without much change on the isolated island for the last 1000 years. The Sagas of the Icelanders written in Icelandic is a very popular set of books like Harry Potter. The story of Thor was first written in Icelandic.

Vikings liked to pillage and trade a lot. One curious viking decided to go and look for Island in a random direction. He came across a small island (not Iceland) and this small island (not Iceland) became a trading route. Then another Viking who was trying to get to this small island (not Iceland) was blown off course and stumbled upon Iceland. Iceland was very harsh when he stumbled upon it, so he named the island “Snowland” and then he left. Then another guy was blown off course and found Iceland and he named it after himself, then he left. Then another guy came and he came to this Snowland named after a guy on purpose and he named it “Iceland”. He made some settlements their, but they were not able to make crops because of the harsh environment so the people (the first Íslendingars) mostly ate fish … and there was plenty of fish. Probably more fish than ice, but Fishland did not sound as cool.
