Have you ever heard of a place called Latium. Latium is where Latin was first spoken. Latium was a diverse region in the location of modern day Italy. The First Romans lived in Latium. Latium was home for many ethnic groups each with their own community, religion, and langauge. We are not talking about millions of people like today, we are talking about in the thousands.

Latium – and the many language groups

The Latin Alphabet could have an origin in Egypt with the hieroglyphics and then the Phoenicians of Lebanon created an alphabet that had influence in Greece and finally Rome. Mysteriously, the Etruscans were named in taking this Phoenician alphabet and mixing it with the spoken Latin to create the Latin alphabet. This final step was around the time of the start of the Roman Empire, 700-BCE. Latin grew with written texts but declined with the decline of the Roman Empire. Latin is seen to be the founding language of the Romance Languages: French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and Italian
