History:
The Xhosa come from the Nguni stock. The moved from the lakes region to the Eastern Cape of South Africa in the 1500’s. They are also called the Red Blanket People. They had battles with the Dutch and the English when the White Imperialist arrived centuries later.
The Xhosa homesteads looked like a beehive made from bent trees and covered with grass. The Xhosa are known for helping anyone in need and valuing community. They cooked food on an open fire in a cast-iron pot and where everyone could eat.
The Xhosa worship their ancestors but also believe a creator exists who cares for them and who protects them in extreme danger. They believe their ancestors watch over the people, their crops and their cattle. Elder Xhosa are revered as spirits. The Xhosa listen to their dreams. Special Xhosa are used to interpret these dreams.
