History or Folklore story:
The Language of Amharic comes from Ethiopia. Here is a story that came from a village in Ethiopia. There once was a boy who lived in an Ethiopian village. He was very shy and afraid of everything. The boy’s family called him Miobe, which means the frightened one. Miobe asked his grandmother, his grandfather, his mother and father, his aunts and uncles, and his neighbors, why they called him that. “Because you are afraid,” they all told him. The boy contemplated these words late into the night and finally concluded that he had to conquer his fears, so he set out into the dark. That night he fell asleep under the darkness not afraid because he whispered the words “I will conquer you, fear.” He kept saying that sentence every time he heard something scary in the darkness. Then Miobe walked in the darkness until the sun rose and he saw a village. At first, he was scared that the people in the village would not be friendly but then remembering to be courageous he walked on towards the village saying “I will conquer you, fear.” when he made it to the village he found that the elders were gathered around muttering among themselves. As Miobe came closer he found that they were talking about the beast on the top of the mountain, but when he looked up he did not see anything. Then when the elders started describing it Miobe started to see the monster that the villagers were afraid of. Miobe then decided that since he was trying to conquer his fear he would go up the mountain and slay the monster. At the base of the mountain, the monster looked humongous. But as Miobe climbed higher and higher up the mountain the monster grew smaller and smaller and smaller until Miobe was right on top of the mountain with a toad at his feet. The toad had wrinkled skin and round frightened eyes. When Miobe returned to the village they all cheered for him. Then he held up his hands with the toad in them and told the elders that this creature was the monster. The Eldar asked the creature their name and when it croaked the Eldar told everyone that the creature’s name was fear. -v

We watched a movie called Lamb. Lamb is filmed in the highlands and foggy farmlands of Ethiopia and the actors and actresses speak entirely in Amharic. Lamb is about a boy who is my age (11 or 12). This boy’s life is very different from my life. The other main character in the movie is a goat called Chulia. His dad wants to go work in the capital city Addis Ababa to make money, so the boy Ephraim is taken to stay on the farm of his great-Aunt. The boy takes with him a lamb that was his mother’s to the Great-Aunt’s house. His mother died in the drought a couple years before. The boy is very attached to the goat because it was his mom’s goat. Ephraim is really into cooking and his new uncle does not like how he is cooking and doing a woman’s job, so he wants to show him how to do man’s work. All Ephraim wants to do is just go back to his home and stay with a different family who will treat him kindly. He finds out that the cost of a bus ticket back to his old home will cost a hundred and twenty (120) birr. Pretty expensive huh. I thought this was going to be about $50, but when I did the money transfer calculation it came out to be $2.58. Two dollars and 58 cents. The plot of the movie is about how Ephraim tries to earn two dollars and 58 cents so he can buy a ticket back home for him and his lamb. Ephrim starts to cook and sell what he cooks at the market. After all day selling lentil pastries he earned about a dollar, however unfortunately some boys beat him up and took all of his money. His uncle wants to slaughter and eat his lamb and says that they will be eating lamb for the holidays. Ephraim is really upset about his uncle’s decision, so he gives his lamb to a shepherd and Ephraim says he’ll pay the shepherd every day to keep the lamb in good shape. When Ephraim went down to the market the next day, he saw the man mistreating his lamb and he went over there and took back his lamb. Ephraim then saw a little girl who was even younger than him, who was shepherding sheep and letting sheep graze and he gave his lamb to her and she took good care of it. Ephraim finally was able to let go of his lamb, and he finally had enough money to go home. But instead of going back to his home he used the money (120 birrs or two dollars and 58 cents) to buy a feast for his new family. Everyone in this movie spoke Amharic except for the lamb who spoke a version of Ovis Aries Lambian which can be understood by 60% of goats. The Ethiopians were always wearing pretty colored scarfs. -e
