Political Geography: Malagasy is the Native language of Madagascar. Native People of Madagascar say that Madagascar is shaped like the left footprint of gods and goddesses. Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world and is located off the coast of Mozambique Africa. There are 22 regions of Madagascar. The capital, Antananarivo is located in one of the middle regions, called Analamanga. Madagascar only has one International Airport. You can drive from one end of the island to the other end, but it might take a while since only about 10% of the roads are paved.


Physical Geography: Madagascar is made up of four main landscape zones. The West Coast is Savannah. The East Coast is Wet. The South West Coast is Arid. The Central is the Highlands. Madagascar’s highest peak is Maromokotro, it is 2876m high, sometimes it even snows up on the peak. The Mangoky is the longest river in Madagascar and Lake Alaotra is the largest lake in Madagascar. A few of the Supercool things you can see in Madagascar are the Tsingy de Bemahara, which is made out of needle-shaped eroded limestone, Avenue of the baobabs, which are really thick trees that are only found in Madagascar. Madagascar is the largest producer of vanilla, providing around 70% of the world’s supply.


Animals: One of the most iconic animals in Madagascar is the Lemar, it is also the National animal of Madagascar. Lemars come in more than a hundred different species. There is also the Zebu Cattle which have fatty shoulder humps, the Native people of Madagascar use them to provide meat and milk.


People of Madagascar: People of Madagascar are called Malagasy. There are about 25 million people who live in Madagascar. Three Native ethnic groups are the Merina, the Betsimisaraka, and the Betsileo. The other 50% is White or Asian. They drive on the right side of the road.


History: The people of Madagascar came from Austronesian people who settled on Madagascar in 350AD, then the Mozambique people sailed across the Mozambique Channel, and the two tribes mixed and became the Malagasy People. The Malagasy People come from a mix of Subsaharan African roots and Southeast Asian roots. There are eighteen Native Malagasy tribes and they all have different costumes and ceremonies. The Malagasy Language has more roots that come from Southeast Asia, the closest language to Malagasy is the “Ma’anyan ” language which is spoken in Borneo. Since Madagascar is a former French colony, French is also spoken in Madagascar but only 1⁄4 of the population is fluent.
